Aeero vs ChatGPT: which helps you stay on top of classes?
ChatGPT is great for explaining concepts. Aeero tracks your Canvas deadlines and texts you first. An honest comparison, and why most students should use both.
The short answer
They solve different problems. ChatGPT is better for explaining concepts, brainstorming and studying when you open it. Aeero is better for staying organized, because it syncs with your LMS and texts you before things are due. Most students get the most out of using both, within their professors' AI policies.
ChatGPT can explain the Krebs cycle three different ways at 1 a.m. It cannot tell you that the lab report you forgot about is due at 8. That's not a knock on ChatGPT. It's just not what it's for.
If you're trying to decide between Aeero and ChatGPT, the honest answer is that they're built for different halves of being a student: understanding the material, and keeping your life from catching fire. Here's how they compare. (Disclosure: Aeero is our project. We'll be upfront about where ChatGPT is better.)
What's the difference between Aeero and ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI you go to. Aeero is a narrow, organization-focused AI that comes to you.
| ChatGPT | Aeero | |
|---|---|---|
| Best at | Explaining, brainstorming, studying, writing feedback | Deadlines, reminders, grades, finals math |
| Knows your deadlines? | Only if you tell it | Yes, from Canvas or your LMS calendar link |
| Texts you first? | Only for Tasks you schedule | Yes, reminders and schedule changes, plus follow-ups until submitted |
| Memory | Yes | Yes |
| Where you use it | App or website | SMS, iMessage, WhatsApp, or web; no download |
| Price | Free tier plus paid plans | Free during the pilot |
| Does homework help? | Yes, including a Study Mode | No |
Features change fast, especially on ChatGPT's side, so treat this as accurate at the time of writing.
Where is ChatGPT better?
Pretty much anything involving thinking through course content:
- Explaining concepts. Stuck on a lecture? Ask it to re-explain with a different analogy, or at a simpler level, until it clicks.
- Studying. Study Mode, available on all plans including free, walks you through problems with guiding questions instead of just giving answers. Asking it to quiz you before an exam is a solid move.
- Brainstorming. Paper topics, ways to structure an argument, counterpoints you haven't thought of.
- Feedback. Pasting in your own draft and asking where the argument is weak (if your class allows it).
Aeero doesn't try to do any of this. If you need a tutor, ChatGPT (or Gemini, or a real human in office hours) is the right call.
Where is Aeero better?
Anything involving when and how much it matters:
It already knows what's due
ChatGPT only knows your deadlines if you type them in. Aeero connects to Canvas directly and sees your due dates, grades, late policies and professor office hours. If your school uses Blackboard, Moodle or Brightspace, you paste your calendar feed link and it tracks due dates from there.
It reaches out first
This is the big one. ChatGPT is reactive: it's brilliant once you open it, but it waits for you. Its scheduled Tasks can send reminders, but you have to set each one up yourself.
Aeero texts you first when something's coming up or a schedule changes. Then it follows up on a task until it's actually submitted, so "remind me tomorrow" doesn't quietly turn into "oh no."
It lives in your texts
No app to download, no tab to remember. It's the same thread where your friends are, which is the whole idea behind why texting beats another app.
It does the grade math with your real numbers
Ask Aeero what you need on your final and it uses your actual Canvas grades to give the score for each letter grade, including telling you honestly when one's out of reach. You can paste your grades into ChatGPT and get the same math, but you have to gather them yourself, and Canvas's displayed grade can be misleading.
It can take a few small actions
With your confirmation every time, Aeero can send a Canvas message to an instructor or classmate, set or change reminders, and add or delete calendar items. That's the full list, on purpose. Handy when you need to send a quick note about an extension before you lose your nerve.
Can ChatGPT connect to Canvas?
Not in a built-in, student-friendly way at the time of writing. Developers can wire ChatGPT to Canvas using custom actions and API tokens (OpenAI has a cookbook example), and Instructure has announced work with OpenAI on AI features inside Canvas. But for a typical student opening ChatGPT today, it doesn't know your courses unless you paste the details in. This is an area that's moving, so it's worth checking again.
Should you use both?
Yes, most students should. They barely overlap:
- Aeero texts you Monday morning: the problem set for Stats is due Wednesday, and your professor doesn't accept late work.
- You open ChatGPT and ask it to explain the concept you're stuck on, or quiz you on it.
- Wednesday afternoon, Aeero checks whether it's submitted. It is. Nice.
One handles the "when," the other helps with the "how."
What about privacy?
Both tools handle personal info, so it's worth knowing the basics. ChatGPT has settings to manage memory and whether your chats are used to improve its models; check OpenAI's current controls. Aeero doesn't sell data, doesn't advertise, and doesn't train AI on your data. You can text STOP to stop messages or DELETE MY DATA to delete your data. More in our FAQ.
Aeero is an independent student project, built by students at Grambling State and Wingate, and it isn't affiliated with any university. It's open to enrolled students 18 and up (17 with guardian permission) and free during the pilot.
The verdict
If you need help understanding your classes, use ChatGPT. If you need help keeping up with them, that's what Aeero is for. If you need both (and let's be honest, most of us do), use both. For a wider look at the options, see the best AI study assistants for college students.
Frequently asked questions
- Can ChatGPT remind me about assignments?
- ChatGPT has a scheduled Tasks feature that can send reminders, with limits that vary by plan. But you have to create each reminder yourself, because it doesn't have a built-in connection to your student Canvas account at the time of writing.
- Can Aeero help me with homework like ChatGPT does?
- No. Aeero doesn't do your homework and isn't a tutor. It's built for organization: deadlines, reminders, grades and what you need on your final.
- Is it okay to use ChatGPT for college assignments?
- It depends on your professor. AI policies vary by class and are usually in the syllabus, so check before you use it on graded work, and never submit AI-written work as your own unless it's explicitly allowed.
- Do I have to choose between Aeero and ChatGPT?
- No. They don't overlap much, so many students use ChatGPT to understand material and Aeero to keep track of when everything is due.
