How to find your Blackboard, Moodle or Brightspace calendar link

Step-by-step: get the iCal calendar feed link from Blackboard Ultra, Moodle and Brightspace (D2L), add it to your phone, and what to do if it's turned off.

The short answer

In Blackboard Ultra, open Calendar, then Calendar Settings, then Share Calendar, and copy the link. In Moodle, open the calendar, click Export calendar, pick your events and time period, and generate the URL. In Brightspace, open Calendar, go to Settings, check Enable Calendar Feeds, save, then click Subscribe and copy the link.

Every learning management system knows your due dates. Not every one makes it obvious how to get them out. Blackboard, Moodle and Brightspace all support iCal feeds, a private link that your phone or Google Calendar can subscribe to, but each one tucks it into a different menu.

Here's where to find it in each, plus what to do when your school has switched it off. (On Canvas? That's a separate guide: sync Canvas to your phone calendar.)

This is for Blackboard Learn Ultra, which most schools on Blackboard now use. These steps match help pages from several universities, including Northern Illinois University and Boston University.

  1. Log in and click Calendar in the main navigation on the left.
  2. Click the Calendar Settings icon (it looks like a gear).
  3. Choose Share Calendar.
  4. Copy the link from the window that opens.

Two things to know:

  • It's all or nothing. The link covers every course you're in. You can't share just one class.
  • Keep it private. Anyone with the link can see your course schedule.

If your school still uses older "Original" course pages, the menus may look different. Your school's Blackboard help site will have the exact wording.

How do you export your Moodle calendar URL?

Moodle calls this "exporting," which sounds like a one-time download, but it also gives you a live link. Steps from the Moodle docs:

  1. Open your Calendar (from the Dashboard calendar block or the navigation, depending on your school's setup).
  2. Scroll to the bottom and click Export calendar. Some versions take you to an "Import or export calendars" page first, where you click Export calendar again.
  3. Under events to export, choose All events or Events related to courses.
  4. Pick a time period. Recent and next 60 days is usually the widest standard option.
  5. Click the button to generate the URL (labeled Get calendar URL or Get URL address, depending on version) and copy it.

Moodle's docs note that the URL includes events from every course you're enrolled in and can't be limited to a single course. Don't click Export to download a file if you want it to stay updated. That gives you a static snapshot.

How do you subscribe to your Brightspace (D2L) calendar?

Brightspace hides the feed behind a setting you have to turn on first. This matches student guides from schools like USC and Memorial University:

  1. Open Calendar, from the calendar widget on your Brightspace homepage or a course's navigation bar.
  2. Click Settings (usually top right).
  3. Check Enable Calendar Feeds and click Save.
  4. Back on the calendar, click Subscribe, which only appears once feeds are enabled.
  5. Pick which calendar you want. All Calendars includes every course, or you can choose one class.
  6. Copy the URL.

Brightspace is the only one of the three that lets you subscribe to a single course, which is handy if you want each class in its own color.

Same place for all three:

AppWhere to add itNotes
Google Calendarcalendar.google.com, then Other calendars, +, From URLComputer only. Changes can take hours to appear.
iPhone CalendarCalendar app, Calendars, Add Calendar, Add Subscription CalendarChoose iCloud as the account to see it on all your Apple devices.
OutlookAdd calendar, then Subscribe from webMenu names vary between Outlook versions.

Whichever you use, the sync is one-way and not instant. Your calendar checks the link on its own schedule, so a deadline your professor moved an hour ago may not have caught up yet.

What if your school disabled the calendar feed?

Some schools turn off calendar feeds, or only enable them for certain courses. If the Share Calendar, Export or Subscribe option is missing, try these in order:

  1. Check your school's LMS help page. Search "[your school] Blackboard calendar" or similar. Menus sometimes have different names after a school customizes them.
  2. Ask IT or the help desk. A quick email asking whether calendar feeds are enabled for students usually gets a straight answer.
  3. Download the .ics file, if that's available. It won't update, but it gets everything in at once. Redo it after big schedule changes.
  4. Build it from the syllabus. Old-school, but it works. Spend 20 minutes the first week adding every exam and major due date by hand.

Whatever you do, the LMS itself stays the source of truth. If your phone and your course page disagree, trust the course page and ask the professor if something looks wrong.

Yes. If your school uses Blackboard, Moodle or Brightspace, you can paste your calendar feed link into Aeero and it'll track your due dates. Instead of waiting for you to open a calendar, it texts you before things are due and keeps checking in until they're submitted. It also remembers context, like which class has been giving you trouble.

The trade-off, honestly: with a calendar feed, Aeero only gets what the feed includes, which is mostly due dates. The deeper stuff, like grades, late policies and office hours, comes through its direct Canvas connection, which these LMSs don't have in Aeero right now. Frequently asked questions

Can I get a calendar link for just one Blackboard or Moodle course?
Usually not. Blackboard Ultra's shared calendar link covers all your courses, and Moodle's docs say its export URL can't be limited to a single course. Brightspace is the exception: its Subscribe window lets you choose one course or all calendars.
Should I download the .ics file or use the link?
Use the link. A downloaded .ics file is a one-time snapshot, so later changes from your professor won't show up. A subscription link keeps updating.
Why don't I see a Subscribe or Share Calendar option?
Your school may have disabled calendar feeds, or you may be on an older version with different menus. Check your school's LMS help page or ask the IT help desk.
How long does it take for changes to show up in Google Calendar?
It can take several hours. Google refreshes subscribed calendars on its own schedule and doesn't offer a manual refresh.
